Automatic pool covers in Benitachell

We manufacture and install automatic slatted covers across the whole municipality of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell: the Cumbre del Sol urbanisation above the cliffs, the village centre 142 metres up, and the urbanisations of Les Fonts, La Joya, Los Molinos, Alcassar, Golden Valley, Vista Montaña and Racó de Nadal. Made in our own factory, fitted by our own crew, with a three-year warranty on structure, motor, slats and installation.

Twelve square kilometres, 2,000 pools and nearly all of them on a hillside

Let us start by sorting out the name, because there are three of them here and all three are correct. The municipality is officially called El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, in Spanish it is Benitachell, and half the people who live here say neither of the two: they say they live in Cumbre del Sol, which is the great urbanisation of the municipality and the name most of our customers come looking for us under. Which is why this page talks about all three at once. ‘Poble Nou’ is not a marketing name: the village was founded quite literally from nothing on 4 January 1698, with twenty-two houses, on the Moorish farmsteads of l'Abiar and Benitatgell, which had been left empty after the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609.

The municipality is tiny: 12.65 km², with the village centre inland at 142 metres above sea level and only two kilometres of coast — but a coast like no other on the Costa Blanca, because it is sheer cliff, over a hundred metres of drop. Down below are the Cala del Moraig, the Cala dels Testos and the Cala del Llebeig, the Cova dels Arcs and the Falla del Moraig; up above, the Puig de la Llorença at 442 metres, the Morro Falquí and the Morro del Roabit. Since nothing can be built on the cliff and there is no seafront promenade on which to raise blocks of flats, all the housing is spread across the hillsides on its own plot: Cumbre del Sol above the sea, and inland Les Fonts, La Joya, Los Molinos, Alcassar, Golden Valley, Vista Montaña, Racó de Nadal and the rural district of Benicambra.

And out of that comes the figure that explains this page. The Catastro has 2,000 pools on record in the municipality of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. In an area of 12.65 km² that works out at more than 158 pools per square kilometre, one of the highest concentrations we have seen anywhere in Spain; and in absolute terms it is more than double the 940 pools that the average municipality in the province of Alicante comes out at. Set it beside this other number: Benidorm, with fifteen times the population, has 1,163 pools on record, because Benidorm is apartment towers and Benitachell is detached houses with gardens. Here a private pool is not the exception, it is the norm.

What we install is exactly what we make, and it is worth saying before anything else: every cover we make is motorised, running on 230 V, and there is no manual or hand-cranked version. As standard it is operated beside the pool with a key switch, hold-to-run — the slats move only while the switch is held and with the water in full view, which is the only safe way to work it; a remote control and operation from a phone appear in the quotation as optional extras. The structure, the shaft, the supports and every bolt are always AISI 316L stainless steel, the molybdenum grade made for marine environments, never aluminium. The slats float on the water: there are no rails, no guides and no side profiles to clean or grease. What rests on anything are the legs and, where one is specified, the housing — a housing we supply ourselves and which can be clad in the same material as the pool. And it carries no alarm and no obstacle sensors: running it with something on top, or pulling the slats by hand, gives no warning of any kind, it damages the mechanism.

We work the same way on the pool that already exists in Les Fonts as on the shell still under construction on a plot at Jazmines. On a finished pool we fit the shaft above the water, its legs resting on the coping stone, on view or inside a housing, without breaking into the shell or changing the filtration plant. On a new build there is room for a submerged shaft in its pit, which cannot be seen from the terrace but has to be allowed for before any concrete is poured. Everything is made to measure and takes 4 to 6 weeks, plus the installation. The warranty is three years and covers the whole assembly: structure, motor, slats and installation. Our covers are built to the French standard NF P90-308. And one more thing, for the sake of honesty: the cover is made at our factory in Torrijos (Toledo) and fitted by our own crew, who travel to the Marina Alta; there is also the Andalusian branch, in San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella). We have no office and no team in Alicante, in the Marina Alta or in Benitachell, and we would rather you knew that before you called us.

What changes in a Benitachell pool

A sloping plot and a tight coping

At Cumbre del Sol the plot falls away towards the sea, and in Les Fonts, La Joya or Los Molinos the ground climbs towards the village. In both cases the shell is won with a retaining wall, the coping stone sits a hand's breadth from the edge and at the sides there is not a centimetre to spare. That shapes the whole project: a shaft above the water has to fit the width that is there, not the width we would like. Which is why we measure ourselves, at the pool itself, before anything is cut.

Open cliff face: 316L and no aluminium

A pool on the edge of the Puig de la Llorença, looking out over the Morro Falquí and the Cala del Moraig, takes the sea breeze with nothing at all to break it: a hundred metres of drop and salt-laden wind for most of the year. Ordinary fixings do not forgive that. Our whole structure, the shaft, the supports and all the fittings are AISI 316L stainless steel, the molybdenum grade used in marine environments; we do not change material by area and there is no cut-price version. All we ask of the owner is a rinse with fresh water now and again.

A municipality of foreign owners

Benitachell has one of the highest proportions of foreign residents of any municipality in Spain: 68.5 % of the municipal register, according to the INE continuous register, the fourth highest proportion in the country. The British predominate, making up more than half the foreign residents — to the point that a British school has its campus at Cumbre del Sol — followed by German and Dutch owners. These are houses that stand empty for stretches of the year, and with the cover closed the bottom of the pool stays clean, the filtration plant works less and chemical use drops by around 35 %.

Where we install in Benitachell and Cumbre del Sol

We cover the whole municipality: Cumbre del Sol and its sectors above the cliff, the old town of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and the urbanisations on the inland hillside. The municipality borders only two others, Jávea to the north and Teulada-Moraira to the south, and from here we carry on through the rest of the Marina Alta: Benissa, Calpe and Dénia.

An honest word about access, which in Benitachell matters as much as the pool does: the slats and the shaft are made to measure and travel in long pieces, and a lorry simply does not fit down many of the streets in Cumbre del Sol. The roads that drop down the cliff, with their hairpin bends and long gradients, and the narrow streets of the old town all mean the approach has to be looked at before the quote. On top of that, the whole municipality is served off the CV-740, the road that links Teulada with Xàbia by way of the town, and in summer it is jammed. Before anything is agreed we check where the material is unloaded and how it is carried up to the pool. If the only way in is by hand, we say so and plan for it; we do not discover it on fitting day. If your pool is in an urbanisation you cannot see on the list, ask for a quote and we will confirm it.

Benitachell has 2,000 pools on the Catastro register

According to the Catastro there are 2,000 open-air pools on record in the municipality of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, 68 more than in 2022, growth of 3.5 % in four years. The province of Alicante as a whole has 132,495 pools spread across 141 municipalities and has gained 6,360 since 2022, 5.0 % more, which makes it the second province in Spain by registered pools, behind only Madrid (147,555). The provincial average works out at some 940 pools per municipality: Benitachell has more than twice that, in an area of only 12.65 km².

The figure is worth comparing before it is used, and the provincial ranking is headed by a neighbour. Jávea / Xàbia, which borders Benitachell to the north, has more pools than any other municipality in Alicante: 9,317. Behind it come Orihuela (7,375), Dénia (5,175), Torrevieja (4,931), Teulada-Moraira (4,887), the city of Alicante (4,866), Calpe (4,744) and Benissa (4,120); further down are Altea (2,890), l'Alfàs del Pi (2,856) and La Nucía (2,542). And there Benitachell appears with its 2,000, ahead of Finestrat (1,471) and, above all, ahead of Benidorm, which has only 1,163. That contrast explains the whole municipality: Benidorm, with fifteen times as many inhabitants as Benitachell, has barely 1,163 pools on record — little more than half the number here — because there the housing is the apartment tower and here it is the villa on its own plot.

That so small a municipality should hold so many pools has a purely physical explanation. Benitachell has no buildable seafront: its two kilometres of coast are cliff more than a hundred metres high, with Cala del Moraig, Cala dels Testos and Cala del Llebeig at the foot of it, reachable on foot but without a metre of promenade on which to put up blocks of flats. With no buildable seafront, growth went to the hillside and to the plot: Cumbre del Sol on the cliff of the Puig de la Llorença, and Les Fonts, La Joya, Los Molinos, Alcassar, Golden Valley, Vista Montaña and Racó de Nadal between the town and the sea. Where another stretch of coast would have one building with a hundred flats, here there are twenty plots with a villa, a garden and a private pool. And the arithmetic bears it out: more than 158 pools per square kilometre of municipal area.

A necessary warning about these numbers, so that nobody reads more into them than is there. The Catastro register under-records: it is a floor, not a ceiling. Some pools were never declared, others are entered late and small ones never make it onto the register at all, so the real figure is higher than the published one. The Catastro does not separate the private pool from the communal one, from a hotel's, or from a residential complex with several bodies of water either: the 2,000 in Benitachell are all the pools registered in the municipality, not 2,000 houses with a pool. And the figure does not go below municipality level: there is no official breakdown by urbanisation, so it cannot be said how many are in Cumbre del Sol and how many in the old town, nor how many in Les Fonts or in La Joya. When we divide the area up by urbanisation we do it by geography and by our own work, never by attributing figures to a sector.

In practice, that profile of a villa on its own plot is the one that gets most out of a cover, and the argument here is not an aesthetic one. A closed slatted cover cuts evaporation by between 70 % and 80 %: in an 8 × 4 metre pool that is between 15,000 and 25,000 litres a year you do not have to replace, and in a municipality where it does not rain for most of the year and water is paid for, that is no small detail. If there is a heat pump, the system's consumption falls by between 50 % and 60 %, and with solar polycarbonate slats the water gains 6 or 7 °C during the day at no running cost. The other reason people call us is safety: closed, the slats form a continuous surface that keeps anyone out of the water and holds 100 kg in line with NF P90-308, which is a French standard, not a European one. It is worth saying plainly: that does not make it walkable or trafficable, and nobody should get on top of it. You can see the whole province on our page for pool covers in Alicante.

Salt, sun and gota fría: what the cliff asks of a cover

Benitachell's climate is its best selling point and, at the same time, what asks most of a cover. It is a very steady Mediterranean one, with around 300 days of sun a year, mild winters and a sea that acts as a thermostat: the Mediterranean gets close to 25 °C at the height of summer and is slow to cool down in autumn. That is not brochure copy: it is the same reason these hillsides were planted with muscatel grapes for raisins for generations, the trade that left behind the riuraus and the windmills that still give one of the urbanisations its name.

For a pool that means the swimming season is genuinely long and that a cover earns its keep over more months of the year than almost anywhere else in Spain. But it also means a great many hours of radiation on the slats. A badly chosen slat fades and turns brittle within a few summers, above all on the Cumbre del Sol terraces facing south and south-west, which is precisely the aspect the plots with a view are after. We work with profiles stabilised against ultraviolet light and we study the real orientation of each pool before recommending a finish and a colour.

The second thing is salt, and here the case is an extreme one. A pool on the edge of the cliff, a hundred metres above the water and with nothing standing between it and the open sea, gets salt breeze almost all year round; on days of levante wind the salt is carried in suspension as far as the centre of the town, two kilometres inland. That is the reason the whole structure, the shaft, the supports and every bolt are AISI 316L stainless steel and not some other material, and the reason we never use aluminium. The upkeep, on the other hand, is next to nothing: rinse the slats, the shaft and the supports with fresh water, above all after several days of sea wind. There are no rails or guides to clean or grease, because the slats float on the water.

The third thing is autumn. In the Marina Alta it rains little and badly: the sky is clear for most of the year, and then September and October deliver the rainfall all at once in gota fría episodes that can drop in a few hours what has not fallen in months. In a municipality of hillsides and ravines like this one — the Barranc del Vicari i de l'Infern runs straight down towards the coast — that water washes soil, grit and everything else in its path into the pool. For the rest of the year it is the pine woods and the scrub that do the dirtying: needles and cones end up in the water every time the wind blows off the land. With the cover closed that dirt stays on top and comes off with a hose, the bottom of the pool stays clean and the filtration plant works less. It counts for a great deal in a municipality where so many owners leave the house shut up for half the season.

And safety counts, which is the other real reason people call us: closed, the cover is a sheet of rigid slats that floats on the water and covers the whole pool — a physical barrier against a fall, not simply a saving on cleaning. With one warning we always repeat, mind: the cover carries no alarm and no obstacle sensors. It detects nothing and it does not stop by itself. Whoever operates it has to watch the water, and pulling the slats by hand or moving them with something on top damages the mechanism without warning.

With all that, choosing a slat in Benitachell is not a matter of taste. PVC works well in the more sheltered pools of the old town and the inland urbanisations; solar polycarbonate puts those clear days to work, gaining temperature and stretching the season at the hillside villas; the clear slat looks best in pools that look out over the sea, which here is nearly all of them. We explain all of it, with sections and weights, on our slat types page, and the shaft systems on cover models. What we do not do, so there is no misunderstanding, is walk-on covers, telescopic covers, pool enclosures, domes, winter tarpaulins or thermal blankets: only automatic slatted covers, and since 2005.

How many months can you swim in Benitachell?

With an automatic cover closed overnight, the swimming season in Benitachell runs from May to November. Without one the pool is down to little more than the summer: the sun is never in short supply here, but the water in an uncovered pool loses at night what it gained during the day, exactly as it does anywhere else, and on a clifftop plot exposed to the wind it loses it sooner.

The cover does two things at once: it stops evaporation, which is where most of the heat goes, and if you choose solar polycarbonate slats it lets the sun through and warms the water underneath at no running cost. And to hold the same temperature right through the season, a heat pump with a cover in place uses 50-60 % less energy.

What owners in Benitachell and Cumbre del Sol ask us

We have a villa at Cumbre del Sol with a pool that was built years ago. Can it be covered without building work?

Yes, and it is the job we are asked for most in Benitachell. On an existing pool we fit the shaft above the water, with its AISI 316L stainless steel legs resting on the coping stone, on view or inside a housing. The shell is not broken into, the tiling is not touched and the filtration plant is not changed; we use the 230 V supply the pool already has. It is the usual solution in the sectors of Cumbre del Sol and at Les Fonts, La Joya or Los Molinos, where many shells were built decades ago and rarely have a catalogue dimension. We measure at your house and build to measure: 4 to 6 weeks from the moment the measurements are agreed, plus the installation.

Our pool is right on the cliff edge, above the Cala del Moraig. Will it stand up to that much salt and wind?

That is exactly what AISI 316L is for, a molybdenum-bearing stainless steel made precisely for marine environments. It is the material of our whole structure, of the shaft, of the supports and of every bolt, with no exceptions and no cut-price version, and we never use aluminium. The slats are not affected by salt either. On a plot as exposed as those on the Puig de la Llorença, all we ask of the owner is to rinse the surface with fresh water now and again, above all after several days of sea wind. There are no rails or guides to grease, because the slats float on the water.

We live abroad and only come over for a few weeks a year. How is the installation organised with the house shut up?

It is the commonest situation in the municipality: 68.5 % of the people on the Benitachell register are foreign and a good share of the housing stock is second homes. We can measure with the house closed if a trusted person, the urbanisation manager or whoever looks after the pool lets us in; we build in Torrijos in the meantime and set the installation for the days you are here. The cover is operated beside the pool with a key switch, hold-to-run, so whoever looks after the house can open and close it without difficulty, with one condition: you have to watch the water, because the cover carries no alarm and no obstacle sensors and does not stop by itself. And with the cover closed while you are away, the bottom of the pool stays clean and chemical use drops by around 35 %.

We are building at Cumbre del Sol and what we are selling is the view. Is there a way to see nothing at all on the coping stone?

Yes: the submerged shaft. The shaft is hidden in a pit inside the shell itself and from the terrace you see nothing but water, which is exactly what you want when the whole argument of the house is the sea and the cliff. The condition is timing: it has to be allowed for in the design, with its dimensions and its electrical supply, before the shell is concreted. If the pool is already built, the solution becomes a visible shaft above the water, on view or inside a housing; we supply that housing ourselves and it can be clad in the same material as the pool. Call us while the pool is still a drawing and we will talk to your builder directly.

Do you have an office in Benitachell or in the Marina Alta? And is there a hand-cranked cover, without a motor?

We have no office and no team in Benitachell, in the Marina Alta or in the province of Alicante. The cover is made at our factory in Torrijos (Toledo) and fitted by our own crew, who travel out to the job; there is also the Andalusian branch, in San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella). We would rather put it that way than invent a local team. And no, there is no hand-cranked version: every cover we make is motorised and we do not build a manual one. What the customer does choose is two things: the shaft (above the water, with or without a housing, or submerged) and the slat (PVC, solar polycarbonate or clear). Nor do we make winter tarpaulins, thermal blankets, walk-on covers, telescopic covers or pool enclosures. The warranty is three years and covers the whole system: structure, motor, slats and installation.

Architects, contractors and developers in Benitachell

If you are an architect, a main contractor or a developer putting up housing at Cumbre del Sol or on any urbanisation in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, what matters is deciding on the cover at design stage: the submerged shaft has to be allowed for in the shell before any concrete is poured, and if the cover arrives at the end of the build it is normally resolved with a visible shaft on the coping stone. On the clifftop plots, with a retaining wall and an infinity pool looking out over the sea, it is also worth checking the clear coping width early on, along with the access for carrying the shaft up, as it travels in one piece along steeply sloping roads. We manufacture ourselves in Torrijos (Toledo), with the structure and all fittings in AISI 316L stainless steel, and we install with our own crew, who travel out. We give you dimensions, electrical consumption and the detail of the supports for the drawing, and manufacture is planned at 4 to 6 weeks plus the installation. If the client is yours, the relationship stays with you.

Benitachell: a longer season without the running costs

In Benitachell the sun is there for most of the year, but the water in an uncovered pool cools down at night just as it does anywhere else, and on a clifftop plot swept by the sea breeze it cools sooner still. Which is why anyone wanting to stretch the season ends up looking at a heat pump.

Before choosing equipment it is worth knowing this: evaporation is the biggest route by which a pool loses heat, and an automatic slatted cover reduces it by between 70 % and 80 %. The consumption of the heating system falls with it by between 50 % and 60 %. Without a cover, the heat pump works all night replacing what evaporates.

The combination that works best in the Marina Alta is a cover with solar polycarbonate slats — which add up to 6-7 °C during the day at no running cost, putting this coast's roughly 300 days of sun to work — with equipment sized afterwards, once the losses are under control. You can see it in detail on pool heating.
