Automatic pool covers in Motril

We make and fit slatted automatic pool covers across the whole municipality of Motril: the town itself and the Guadalfeo vega, the Playa Granada and Los Moriscos developments, El Varadero and Santa Adela, the hillsides of Minasierra and the villages of Carchuna and Calahonda. Structure and fittings in AISI 316L stainless steel, fitted on a pool that is already built or on a new build. Three-year warranty covering structure, motor, slats and installation.

The largest town on the Costa Tropical, and three very different ways of covering a pool

Motril has around sixty thousand inhabitants and is the second-largest town in the province of Granada after the capital, so there is no single typical pool here: there are three. In the town centre, in Santa Adela and out on the Guadalfeo vega — the fertile plain the river leaves behind — most of the pools are one-off shells built on the plot in the eighties and nineties, rectangular, with the coping stone tight to the edge and barely any clearance down the sides. In Playa Granada, the development that grew up around the Los Moriscos golf course, the building is more recent, there are residents' associations, and the pool is looked at from the living room: what people ask for there is a cover that does not get in the way of the view. And on the hillsides of Minasierra and in the villages of Carchuna and Calahonda, between terraces of subtropical fruit and flat land under greenhouses, you find stepped plots with retaining walls a hand's width from the water. There are 1,474 pools on the Catastro register and hardly any two the same size, so we make every cover to measure, in 316L stainless steel and built to the NF P90-308 standard, after measuring the shell ourselves.

What sets us apart in Motril

A manufacturer, not a middleman

We design, make and fit the cover ourselves. You deal directly with the people who build it: no commission-only salespeople, no subcontractors and no mark-up for passing the job along.

A slat chosen for each setting

Opaque PVC, to insulate and shut the pool away, for the shells out on the vega; solar polycarbonate to make the most of the Costa Tropical sun; and transparent where the pool is part of the view. We measure the shell and study its orientation before recommending anything.

NF P90-308 safety

Closed, a slatted cover is a physical barrier that protects children and pets, and it is built to the NF P90-308 standard. More than 5,000 installations across Spain stand behind it.

Where we fit covers in Motril

We cover the whole municipality: the town and the vega, the coastline running from Playa de Poniente to Las Azucenas, the Playa Granada development and the autonomous local entity of Carchuna-Calahonda. And we carry on along the rest of the Costa Tropical: westwards through Salobreña, Almuñécar and La Herradura, and eastwards to Torrenueva Costa.

There are two Calahondas, and this is the Motril one. The Calahonda of the Costa Tropical is a village of Motril: the fishing village tucked into its cove, between Carchuna and the Sierra de Lújar, inside the autonomous local entity of Carchuna-Calahonda. It has nothing to do with the Calahonda of Mijas, which is in the province of Málaga, on the Costa del Sol; if that is where your pool is, its page is pool covers in Mijas.

If your pool is somewhere else on the map, have a look at pool covers in the province of Granada or the general page on pool covers in Andalusia, and if your town is not listed, ask us for a quote and we will confirm the timings for you.

Motril has 1,474 pools on the Catastro register

According to the Catastro, the Spanish property register, there are 1,474 open-air pools recorded in Motril, 112 more than in 2022. That is around 3.6% of the 40,956 the Catastro counts across the 174 municipalities of the province of Granada, a provincial stock that has added 3,278 shells over the same period, a rise of 8.7%. Motril has grown by 8.2%, a little below the provincial average: the pool is no recent fashion here — it was already in place.

That count measures shells, not use: the Catastro records the pool and does not look at how many days a year anybody swims in it. The figure has to be read as a guaranteed minimum, never as an exact total, and for three reasons. The first is that the register runs behind reality and leaves out undeclared shells. The second is that it lumps together the pool of a villa out on the vega, the pool of a block of flats, the pool of a hotel in Playa Granada and the pool of a club. And the third is that it does not go below municipality level: there is no breakdown between the town centre, Santa Adela, Playa Granada, Carchuna and Calahonda.

That is why you will not see figures by development or by village here: the Catastro does not publish them, and we would rather not invent them. If you want the context for the whole province, it is on the pool covers in Granada page.

Salt, subtropical sun and dust off the vega: what Motril asks of a cover

Motril lives right up against the sea, with a working commercial and fishing port on its doorstep. That means air laden with salt over the pools of El Varadero, Santa Adela, Playa Granada, Carchuna and Calahonda for much of the year, and salt is unforgiving with ordinary fixings. Which is why our whole structure, the shafts and the fittings are AISI 316L stainless steel, the molybdenum-bearing grade used in marine environments, and we neither change material from one area to the next nor offer stripped-down versions.

The sun asks much the same of the slat. The Costa Tropical has around 320 days of sunshine a year, mild winters and temperatures that rarely drop below 12 °C, and all that radiation falls straight onto the south-facing terraces of Playa Granada and the stepped plots of Minasierra. A badly chosen slat fades and turns brittle within a few summers. We work with profiles stabilised against ultraviolet light, and we study the real orientation of each shell before recommending a finish and a colour.

The third thing that marks Motril out is the vega. The Guadalfeo leaves behind a fertile plain of cherimoya, avocado and mango — on the same terraces where sugar cane was grown for centuries — and the flat land at Carchuna is given over to greenhouses. When the wind turns inland, all of that ends up in the water: fine dust, leaves off the subtropical trees and material washed down off the vega. With the cover closed that dirt stays on top, the bottom stays clean and the filter works far less hard. Add to that a figure that counts for a lot on the Costa Tropical: the cover holds back between 70% and 80% of evaporation and cuts the consumption of chemical product by around 35%.

And then there is safety, which is what families and residents' associations ask about most. Closed, the mat of rigid slats rests on the coping stone and is a real physical barrier against a fall, not merely a saving on cleaning. The slats float on the water, with no rails and no guides inside the shell, so there is nothing to rub against and nothing to clean on the bottom.

With that climate, choosing the slat in Motril is not a question of taste. Opaque PVC suits the pools out on the vega and the more sheltered ones, because it insulates and shuts the pool away; solar polycarbonate makes use of those clear days to gain temperature and stretch the season; and transparent is the one chosen in Playa Granada when the pool is seen from the living room and nobody wants to block the view out to sea. We explain all of it, with sections and weights, on our slat types page, and the shaft systems on cover models.

How many months can you swim in Motril?

With an automatic cover drawn at night, the swimming season in Motril runs from May to November. Without one the pool gives you little more than a short summer: the water is slow to warm up in spring and loses it again as soon as the sun eases off.

The cover does two things at once: it stops evaporation, which is where most of the heat goes, and if you choose solar polycarbonate slats it lets the sun through and warms the water underneath at no running cost. And to hold the same temperature right through the season, a heat pump with the cover in place uses 50-60% less energy.

What people ask us in Motril

Do you fit covers in Carchuna and Calahonda too, or only in Motril itself?

Across the whole municipality: the town centre, Santa Adela, Minasierra, Puntalón, Las Ventillas, Los Tablones, La Garnatilla, El Varadero, Playa Granada and the autonomous local entity of Carchuna-Calahonda, taking in Carchuna, Calahonda, La Perla de Andalucía and La Chucha. We arrange the measuring visit and the installation from our factory in Torrijos (Toledo) or from our Andalusia branch in San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella), always on a date agreed in advance.

My pool dates from the eighties and it is out on the vega. Will it mean building work?

No. On a pool that is already built we fit the shaft above the water, resting on the coping stone on its AISI 316L stainless steel supports. The shell is not touched, none of the tiling is chipped out and there is no need to drain beyond the bare minimum. It is the usual answer on the plot pools of Motril, where the shell rarely matches a catalogue size: which is why we measure it ourselves before anything is cut and make the cover to your real dimensions.

Will it stand up to the salt air off the port and the Motril beaches?

That is exactly what the 316L is for: a molybdenum-bearing stainless steel made for marine environments. It is the material of our whole structure, of the shafts and of the fittings, with no exceptions and no stripped-down versions. The slat is not affected by salt either. All we ask of the owner is to rinse the surface with fresh water now and then, above all after several days of onshore wind.

In Playa Granada the pool is seen from the living room. Which slat blocks the view least?

Transparent polycarbonate, which lets you see the water underneath, and it is the one usually chosen when the pool is part of the view. If what you are after is temperature, solar polycarbonate makes use of the Costa Tropical sun and warms the water at no running cost; and if you would rather insulate and shut the pool away, opaque PVC. There is another decision ahead of the slat, too: on a new build, a submerged installation keeps the shaft hidden in a pit inside the shell and from the terrace you see nothing but water, although it has to be allowed for with the builder before the concrete goes in.

How long does it take, and what exactly does the warranty cover?

Manufacturing takes four to six weeks from the order being confirmed, and on top of that comes the installation, carried out on an agreed visit. The warranty is three years and covers the whole system: structure, motor, slats and installation. Two more things, just in case: all our covers are motorised and are worked on a key switch beside the pool, hold-to-run, meaning the slats move only while the key is held, and there is no crank-handle version; and the cover has no alarm and no obstacle sensors, so working it with something lying on top of it, or pulling the slats by hand, damages the mechanism without warning anybody.

Architects, contractors and developers in Motril

We manufacture in our own workshop in Torrijos (Toledo), with the structure and the fittings in 316L stainless steel, and we take care of the installation. For a practice, a main contractor or a developer, what matters is deciding the cover at project stage: a submerged shaft has to be allowed for in the shell before any concrete is poured, and when the cover arrives at the end of the build the usual answer is a visible shaft. If the project is in Motril or anywhere else on the Costa Tropical and the client is yours, the relationship stays with you.

Motril: a longer season without the running costs

In Motril the sun is with you for much of the year, but the water in an uncovered pool cools overnight just as it does anywhere else, and on the Costa Tropical that shows up precisely in the months when you would still like to swim. Which is why anyone who wants a longer season ends up looking at a heat pump.

Before choosing equipment, this is worth knowing: evaporation is the largest route of heat loss in a pool, and an automatic slatted cover reduces it by between 70% and 80%. Heating consumption drops with it, by between 50% and 60%. Without a cover, the heat pump works all night replacing what evaporates.

The combination that works best here is a cover in solar polycarbonate — which adds up to 6-7 °C during the day at no running cost — with equipment sized afterwards, once the losses are under control. Adding up the water that no longer evaporates, the 35% less chemical product and, if there is a heat pump, that 50-60% less consumption, in a town with a long season like Motril the cover pays for itself in four to seven years. You can see it in detail on pool heating.
