First, the size of it. The province of Barcelona has 108,322 outdoor pools on record in 310 municipalities (Dirección General del Catastro, 2026), 7,365 more than in 2022. Read it as a floor, not a ceiling: the Catastro updates only through revaluations and voluntary declarations. The city itself has just 1,531, because only 10,074 of its 671,178 main residences are houses — 1.5 per cent (2021 census). The volume sits outside it, in the two Vallès comarques, the Maresme, the Baix Llobregat and the Garraf; the largest single count in Catalonia is Sant Cugat del Vallès, with 5,031.

316L marine-grade steel, 200 metres from the sea or 20 km inland

Structure, shafts, brackets and fittings are AISI 316L stainless steel, the marine grade — the same material in a Pedralbes garden and on a plot in Cabrils or Sitges, where the problem is not frost but salt-laden air. The slat is 60 mm wide, rated Hail Class 4, with a 10-year UV warranty. The structure lasts beyond 15 years, the slats 10 to 15.

Built around owners who are not here all year

In the Garraf and the upper Maresme much of the housing is second homes: 33.1 per cent of the dwellings in Sitges are not a main residence (2021 census), so the pool sits alone for nine months. We measure with whoever holds the keys, quote by email and set the fitting date around your travel.

These are pools on record with the Catastro: they show where the stock is, not how many sit in one street; no census exists by neighbourhood. Send the location, the shell dimensions and a photograph of the narrowest way in, and we will confirm the lead time.

The English-speaking pool owner here is a different person

The province has 1,075,119 foreign residents, 18.04 per cent of its population (Idescat, 1 January 2025), but on its own that number misleads: the population is urban and lives in flats, and the city holds 53.9 per cent of the province’s British residents and 52.9 per cent of its Germans. The property registry is blunter. Foreign buyers took 14.21 per cent of the homes sold in the province in 2025 (Colegio de Registradores), against 32.80 per cent in Málaga and 43.29 per cent in Alicante — less than half. We would rather write that down than pretend this is the southern coast. The trend is real, though: that share was 10.26 per cent in 2022.

Three maps, not one

So this page is for three specific readers, not a generic expat. First, the Garraf: Sitges has 27.47 per cent foreign residents and the United Kingdom is its first foreign nationality, with 1,105 people. Second, corporate relocation in the Vallès: of Sant Cugat del Vallès’s 14,939 foreign residents, 526 are British, 465 from the United States and 302 Dutch — English there is a working language, not a retirement one. Third, the school map: the British School of Barcelona has campuses in the city, two in Castelldefels, one in Sitges and one in Cabrera de Mar, and the American School and the Deutsche Schule are in Esplugues de Llobregat. That is why Castelldefels holds 791 German residents, the largest group outside the capital — though there the Italians (2,357) outnumber the British (612) four to one.

That changes the job. A second home in the Garraf or the upper Maresme is a pool nobody watches for nine months: evaporation, leaf litter and a closed surface while the garden is empty. A relocation house in Sant Cugat or Matadepera is usually new or refurbished, and there the cover belongs in the drawings: a submerged shaft has to be allowed for before any concrete is poured. A finished pool takes a visible shaft on the coping and no work in the shell at all — the normal case, and the subject of fitting a cover to a pool you already have. A flat in the Zona Alta usually means a communal pool, decided by a committee with a managing agent.

From abroad

How this runs when you are not in Spain

None of this needs you in Spain, and it does not depend on a van setting out from Toledo to find your gate: the visit and the fitting are our team in Barcelona, and the cover is made in our own factory. This is where you are needed.

  • Measurements. Internal length and width of the shell, photographs of both ends, of the coping and of the narrowest point on the way in. Otherwise our team in Barcelona measures on site with whoever has access.
  • Quotation. Itemised, by email, within 24 working hours, with no obligation.
  • Shaft and slat. Above the water, with or without a box, or submerged and out of sight; PVC or polycarbonate slats, solar or clear. See cover models and slat types.
  • Manufacture. 4 to 6 weeks in Torrijos once you approve the quotation.
  • Fitting and handover. One or two days with our team in Barcelona, then photographs of the finished job. Every cover is motorised, 230 V at 50 Hz, with a remote or a wall switch, and there is no unpowered version — coming from North America, expect Spanish mains rather than 120 V.

Payment: we publish no prices, because each cover is made to one shell’s dimensions; financing is available through BBVA. We answer Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00 CET.

Climate and materials

The coast and the Vallès do not ask for the same cover

Two climates sit barely fifteen kilometres apart here, and they change what the cover is for. Meteocat’s Barcelona-el Raval station (2010-2025) records 0.0 days of frost a year and 98.3 tropical nights, with mean relative humidity of 63.8 per cent. On the far side of the Collserola ridge, Sant Cugat-CAR (2014-2025) records 10.4 days of frost, 61.2 days above 30 °C, only 31.3 tropical nights and an absolute minimum of −4.4 °C. On the coast the season is long and the cover is there for evaporation and dirt; inland it lengthens the season at both ends.

Salt, pine and hail

On the Maresme and in the Garraf the enemy is salt-laden air rather than cold: hence AISI 316L for the structure, the shafts, the brackets and every fitting. Those two coasts and Begues are pine country, and pine needles foul water faster than leaves. The same series records 83.3 mm of rain in one September hour, the downpour that washes weeks of dust into the shell. Inland the Vallès gets hail, and the slat is rated Hail Class 4.

So the slat follows the plot: PVC under trees, as in Collserola and the pine plots of the Garraf; solar polycarbonate to let the sun warm the water in April and October.

Water and running costs

Nothing is restricted in Catalonia today, which is precisely when to fit a cover

Let us be exact, because much has been said about water here. On 24 September 2026 all eighteen supply units in Catalonia were in normalitat, the Ter-Llobregat system stood at 77.51 per cent, and the Barcelona area has been in normal status since 16 May 2025 (Agència Catalana de l’Aigua). No restriction on filling a private pool is in force, and Catalonia levies no tax on private pools.

What does exist is the drought plan, Acord GOV/1/2020, for the next time. Under alerta, topping up is limited to replacing evaporation losses. Under excepcionalitat that mention of evaporation disappears: only the minimum needed to keep the water sanitary is allowed, and the first filling of a new single-family pool stops being permitted. Under emergència even partial topping up is prohibited whatever the source of the water, private borehole and tankered water included. A covered pool reaches that scenario with the shell full and needing nothing. That is the honest reason to fit one now, and it is not fear.

The water agency itself recommends a cover in writing in its household saving guidance: it cuts evaporation by up to 70 per cent, prevents frost damage and keeps organic matter out. The tariff does the rest: the metropolitan household tariff is banded and progressive, and the top band works out at 10.31 euros including VAT for a cubic metre (tariffs published in the BOPB of 23 February 2026) — a band a household with a garden and four or five people can already sit in before the pool is counted, so every cubic metre lost to evaporation is paid for at the dearest rate on the bill. An 8 by 4 metre pool loses 15,000 to 25,000 litres a year to evaporation; less organic matter also means roughly 35 per cent less chemical consumption, and with a heat pump a closed cover cuts 50 to 60 per cent of the heating energy.

Yes, and much of our work is like that. My pool was built twenty years ago. Does it have to be rebuilt?

Almost never. On a finished pool the cover goes in as an above-water model, the shaft on the coping and no work in the shell. A submerged shaft stays out of sight but must be allowed for before the concrete is poured, so it belongs to a pool being built or refurbished.

We are 200 metres from the sea in the Maresme. Will it survive the salt?

That is what the material is for. Structure, shafts, brackets and fittings are AISI 316L stainless steel, the marine grade, on every cover we build, coast or inland. The slat carries a 10-year UV warranty, the structure lasts beyond 15 years and the slats 10 to 15.

Do I need a permit, and is covering a pool compulsory in Catalonia?

Covering is not compulsory: no Catalan rule obliges you to cover or fence the pool of a single-family home. On the permit there is no closed answer, because no Catalan rule names pool covers: with no work in the shell the usual route is a comunicació prèvia, and a works licence on non-developable land. A communal pool differs: the building code, CTE DB-SUA section SUA 6, requires a 1.20 m barrier there and a cover does not replace it. Ours are built in line with the French standard NF P90-308, the sector’s reference and not a Spanish legal requirement: a closed cover bears an adult’s weight, but it is not a walkable surface and never replaces supervision.

How does payment work, and can it be financed?

The quotation is itemised, in writing and free of obligation. We publish no prices, because every cover is made for one particular shell. Financing is available through BBVA and other lenders. The warranty runs three years on structure, motor, slats and installation, and it is Ingerclima’s; anything the cover needs afterwards is seen to by our team in Barcelona.

Architects, developers, pool builders and managing agents

In 2025, 1,001 detached houses were started in the Barcelona demarcation (building permits, Generalitat), and the split by comarca says which conversation is which: Vallès Occidental 220, Vallès Oriental 195, Baix Llobregat 138, Maresme 122, Garraf 107 and Barcelonès just 9. Inside the city the work is refurbishment and communal pools; in the Vallès and the Garraf it is new build, and there the cover belongs in the drawings, because a recess for a submerged shaft has to be allowed for before any concrete is poured. On a communal pool, tell the committee plainly: the CTE DB-SUA barrier of 1.20 m is mandatory and a cover does not replace it.
